Most travellers arrive in the Maldives knowing nothing about atolls. Why would they? Twenty-six concentric rings of coral and sand are not the kind of thing one studies in advance. But they matter.
Baa Atoll has the manta plankton bloom, May to November. The water turns soup-thick with shrimp and the rays show up in the hundreds.
Noonu is what people mean when they say "the Maldives" — clear water, scattered private islands, and the resorts you've heard of (Velaa, Cheval Blanc, Soneva Jani).
The far south — Gaafu, Addu — feels like a different country. Fewer flights, fewer resorts, and reefs that haven't been swum-over for forty years.
We usually ask members what they want from the trip first, then suggest an atoll. The order matters.
